The most ancient settlement of La Scheggia

Nestled in the hills that divide the Tiber Valley from the Arno Valley, the small hamlet of La Scheggia is a rural settlement dating back to the 15th century at 8 km from Anghiari and 18 Km from Arezzo.
The apartments and cottages, which the Marquises Francesco and Franca d’ Afflitto restored in the 80’s, still maintain the original imprint of the rural life; the complex is a typical example of the rural architecture of the Grand-ducal era according to the classification given by the Building Authority of Arezzo. The enchanting beauty of the hillcrests between La Scheggia and Montauto, which are in the background of many paintings of Piero della Francesca, has remained untouched, thanks to the planning restrictions imposed in the 50’s. La Scheggina the rural complex recently renovated by Stefania d’ Afflitto for her guest, consists of three rustic buildings and two small apartments within the farmhouse. La Casa di Stefania, bordering the woods, is an ancient shelter for the animals of the farm that overlooks a garden rich in rosemaries, lavanders, Spanish brooms and olive trees. This is the ideal place where at dawn you can enjoy the intense scents of the Mediterranean vegetation, relax in the shade during the summer sun-drenched afternoons while listening to the cicadas chirping, and you can stare at the colours of the sun setting behind the Apennine mountains, and plunge in the unbounded starry skies over the pergola overlooking the Tiber valley... La Fagianaia was once a small chapel dedicated to Saint Biagio, then was turned into a sighting tower for the adjacent Montauto castle, which is outlined by Leonardo da Vinci in his map of Val di Chiana. Today it is a farmhouse that can host six guests, with a breathtaking view of the Tiber Valley and the Montauto hill. La Capanna once a barn of the farm, today has been transformed into a two-storey detached house that stands in the shadow of a big oak. The small apartments for 2 or 4 people are the ideal place for a weekend of idleness and contemplation! |
